Finally IKEA

I briefly saw on the news this morning that IKEA is finally opening in Charlotte. This makes me happier then it probably should. Though I am sworn to never purchase more furniture from said IKEA (the husband forbids it), I am still smitten with the store and am all too thrilled to have one within a 2 hour drive. I have driven up to DC twice just to go to IKEA. That's a 4-5 hour drive folks.

IKEA is a very family-oriented store with a big kids section (that I've never spent any time in). IKEA Charlotte is said to open February 18th. Aside from having a very affordable price point, I like that IKEA really engineers their products with the environment in mind. Everything comes packed as compact as possible to maximize space. Most of the furniture is MDF or particle board with wood veneers or made of wood from fast growing trees. I don't know a whole lot about the company, but what I do know, I love and I am happy to be able to patronize them on a more regular basis.

Love it, too!
But Jeni, if you can make it to Charlotte within 2 hours, you're SPEEDING like a mad woman! :)

Good point! Actually it was 2 hours from when I lived in Mebane so it's probably more like 2.5 now :)

hah. i love that you're willing to drive 2 hours to go anywhere! if it's not within 20 minutes of me, i order online :) i also loved your clock watching comment on my post. i've been known to do that, myself :)

I hear you, normally I would not. The problem with IKEA is that they don't offer much online. And the shipping is way pricey. I'd need to have a good amount of stuff in mind to drive down there, but with baby en route, I know that's likely :)

IKEA sells baby furniture?

Jeni said...

I'm not sure if they sell baby furniture (we're set on that anyhow), but more decor and toys, that kind of stuff. I'm looking forward to it for the toddler stuff. They've got some really cute things :)

Hey Jeni!

IKEA does sell cribs and high chairs etc, and they do have a GREAT kids area. Our 6 and 7 year old love playing in both smalland (the free daycare section)and in the kids product area. There's an egg shaped chair with a canopy that pulls down to hide the kid in the chair that is a perennial favorite ;-). They have GREAT stuffed animals, with a big focus on all their kids fabrics/toys being organic and non-toxic(no off gassing, yay!).

Send your husband over to http://www.ikeafans.com on the forums, and we'll see if we can't influence his dislike a bit :-).

Hey sister! I'm Swedish. AND Ikea is a Swedish company! :) I know everything you need to know about this place. We live less than an hour from one and we go pretty often, for food items and the kid section is awesome, and so is the household stuff. They really have some nice looking designs. In Sweden everyone has Ikea pieces, mixed in with antiques and "real" designer furniture. It's like H&M (also Swedish), you get your basics there and some nicely designed clothing, but you don't fill your whole wardrobe...
Anyway, shame we don't live closer to you cause we could meet you at Ikea for lunch! If you haven't already, pick up some Swedish chocolate next time too!

I actually did know they were Swedish! My brother turned me on to some of the Swedish candy. He did a semester near Lund and came back with bags of these little gummy type cars, bilar? I remember I scored some at IKEA once and he was forever grateful :)

I'm happy to see I'm not the only IKEA lover around!!!

Bilar! Yes, yummy! But it makes you very sick to eat a whole bag in one sitting.
Wow, that's so neat that your brother was in Lund. My sister is moving down south, Malmo, this spring, right next to Lund.
Ah well, hubby's done washing the kids in the tub and I have to go get the wet butts in towels Have a good night!
