Being neighborly

We live in a very animal friendly neighborhood. One that even has it's own dog park. I love animals, well most of them (just kidding). As I tell you this story, keep in mind that we have no pets. We'd like to have a dog (someday), once our child is older. We're both definitely dog people. Neither of us are particularly fond of cats.

That being said, for the past 3 months or so a long haired tortoise shell cat has been hanging out on our street. This cat has taken to hanging out in our yard, relieving itself in our yard and new garden beds and most recently, leaving it's indigestion on our front porch.

With the amount of money and hard work we've put into our gardening and yard maintenance, this is more then a nuisance. It's one thing to have burned out spots in our grass and random plants from our own pets, but when it's someone else's? Well that really torques my jaw (as my husband would say). I've posted a message on my neighborhood listserve hoping someone claims their cat, but if I get no response, we're going to catch this thing and call animal control.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to snare a feline?

Squeal, "Does the kitty want a snackie?," in a really high pitched voice while shaking a container of cat food - or in your case, little pebbles. The cat won't know the difference.

I bet that would work great! Then do I use a large butterfly net or do you think a pillowcase would work? hahaha

Cats can be hard to catch, especially if you want to club it instead of coax it your way! Is there no tag on the cat? Will animal control not catch it for you?

If not, Melanie's idea sounds good with your idea added to it. You or Mark could lure the cat while the other stands by with a blanket to throw over the cat and scoop it up. Good luck with that!

At least it's not as bad as people who walk their dog TO YOUR YARD so that it can take a dump. Jeez. I'm one of the only people in my neighborhood who picks up after my TWO dogs. That really torques my jaw! :)

Yep. Not a cat lover, here. Once we had a possum problem and called animal control, but only caught the neighborhood cats in the metal cage (hint, hint).

I'd much rather see them do their business in my flower bed than in the nearby playground at six a.m., then see the neighbors' kids playing in that same spot later in the day.

On one of the military installations where I lived as a child, cats had to be collared and leashed the same as dogs. I would support such a local law FULLY.

Oh you know it never occurred to me that animal control could set up traps. I think I'll give them a call! And I agree about the playground thing.
